300 Irregular Verbs in Five Forms
Table of Contents
Introduction
Irregular verbs do not follow the standard “-ed” rule when moving into the past tense and past participle forms. Instead, they change their spelling entirely (for example, go – went – gone; speak – spoke – spoken), or sometimes they do not change at all (for example, put – put – put; let – let – let). Therefore, to use them properly in sentences and in different tenses, you have to memorize them independently!
There are around 200 commonly used irregular verbs in English. However, if we prepare a comprehensive list, including not so frequently used verbs, rare verbs, or archaic forms, it can exceed 300 verbs. While the total count may vary, we use about 100 to 200 verbs in daily conversations and business English.

Main Considerations
Irregular Past Tense/Participle: Irregular verbs do not follow the standard “-ed” rule for past simple or past participle forms. For example, teach becomes taught and not ‘teached’; eat becomes ate and not ‘eated’; think becomes thought and not ‘thinked’.
British vs. American English: British English often includes more irregular forms (for example, learn – learnt – learnt; spell – spelt – spelt), whereas American English often uses regular forms (for example, learn – learned – learned; spell – spelled – spelled).
New Verbs: When new verbs added to the English language, they are regular verbs in most of the cases.
